Altruism and The Selfish Gene

Richard Dawkins has written books on evolution. One of them is "The Selfish Gene." If his theory is true, how can people be so nice to strangers?

*altruism: willingness to do things that bring advantages to others, even if it results in disadvantage for yourself
*tip of the iceberg: a small, noticeable part of a problem, the total size of which is really much greater
*kinship: the relationship between members of the same family
*reciprocal: used to describe a relationship in which two people or groups agree to do something similar for each other, to allow each other to have the same rights, etc
*social Darwinism: an extension of Darwinism to social phenomena; specifically : a sociological theory that sociocultural advance is the product of intergroup conflict and competition and the socially elite classes (as those possessing wealth and power) possess biological superiority in the struggle for existence
(適者生存・優勝劣敗という発想から強者の論理となり、帝国主義国による侵略や植民地化を正当化する論理にもなったとされる。)
*antidote: something that helps to improve the effects of something bad or negative

I want to be nicer than the person I've become.
